I make no apologies for editing and bumping this post, originally from March 2016 (albeit with some new content: a full resolution 24-bit 192kHz version has been added and I rescanned some of the art work). Back then I was looking forward to Bowie's so-called Berlin Trilogy albums finally getting remastered and re-released in 2017. They've now appeared in a box set, A New Career In A New Town 1977 - 1982, which hasn't (I think it's safe to say) met with universal approval. I'm not going to discuss the issues here (there are plenty of places on the interwebs where people are doing just that - if sometimes a little obsessively) beyond saying that for me the biggest single problem is the dynamic compression and peak limiting that has been applied to each of the albums, squashing every last ounce of subtlety out from the mixes. When I posted this last year I wrote that, as things stood then, "...I don't think you can do much better than the original UK vinyl." Your mileage may vary, but for me at least this is still the case.
This rip provides a chance to hear (allowing of course for the limitations of my skills and system) how "Heroes" sounded in it's original UK release. It was manually de-clicked throughout. The quiet instrumental tracks on Side 2 in particular took a lot of time (and I’m sure I didn’t remove every last micro-tick) but hopefully the result justifies the effort.
Thank you! One of my favourite albums and, as you say, it's not well-served on CD.
